Maryknoll Lay Missioners in Cambodia

Retreat in Kampot

16-18 November 2012

FRIDAY  |  Saturday  |   Sunday

The Maryknoll Lay Missioners in Cambodia try to have various activities to build up and support their community and to give life to the group. Each year they have some sort of retreat, and this year the group went to Les Manguiers in Kampot Province, an eco-friendly guest house and center.

Loading the van
The trip started early in the day at the Seedling of Hope office where we met to avoid the traffic toward the center of the city caused by the arrival of President Obama and other heads of government who are coming to Phnom Penh for an ASEAN meeting.

The main retreat building
After a three-hour drive south to Kampot Province, we arrived at Les Manguiers. This is the main building where we used a large room as our retreat meeting place.

Bicycles at the center
The center has a series of bungalows in addition to two larger buildings, and there are bicycles for borrowing and kayaks to rent for fun on the river estuary. The center is built right on the river.

Also on the grounds of Les Manguiers are several rice paddies and today some women were harvesting rice.

After an introductory session, it was time to go to the little shelters built over the river where dinner was served.
Relaxing before supper

Maria Montello began the retreat and led us through the evening session which included viewing the short film "The Man Who Planted Trees."
